The legend of the Belogradchik Rocks
Centuries ago, monasteries existed up where the Belogradchik rocks are today. Early every morning, the devoted to God nuns were praying. Valentina, the youngest amongst them, was very beautiful and she couldn’t hide that even under her cassock.
Only once in a year, the people were allowed to visit the monastery. On this day, Valentina met a young roman patrician, named Antonio. One night, Antonio climbed a rope and stepped over into Valentina's cell. The sin was committed…
Nights filled with love and happiness followed. No matter how hidden their love was, soon it was revealed. Behind the thick monastery walls, everything could be hidden, but not that childish cry…
Valentina faced a trial before the court of the monks and nuns. It took them a long time to think of a heavy punishment for Valentina. Finally, they decided to anathematize and throw her out of the monastery as a symbol of treachery. Accursed and banished, she stood outside the gates of the monastery, embracing her child. At this time, from the hill, Antonio appeared, riding his white horse. And then a miracle happened…God sent a storm, thunder and an earthquake - and the monastery collapsed. Everything around had turned into a stone. Valentina turned into a stone that is today called “Madonna”, holding baby in her arms. All of them exist even today - the Madonna with the child, the Horseman, and the Monks.
The Belogradchik Rocks
The unique and beautiful rocks of Belogradchik were molded by the nature in the course of 200 millions of years. Different natural factors that have lasted for milleniums, have resulted in the formation of numerous figures and compositions having the shape of people and animals. “The School Girl”, “The Mushrooms”, “The Bear”, “The Eagle”, “The Madonna”, ”The Monks”, “The Camel”, “The Shepherd”, “The Rider” and “The Cuckoo” are just part of them. You just have to have a little imagination to recognize them. But it is something that can’t be described with words, it just has to be seen.
